As I said, there are elements, such as the right stick integration, that made it into this year's game, but at first glance it's very clear that the PC version of NHL 09 was built on an entirely different framework than the console SKU. The menus are laughably old school, as are the presentation elements on-ice. It's the presentation and the gameplay that differ the most (and it's all for the worse) from the extraordinary console renditions. It's incredibly annoying and seems entirely unneeded. In NHL 09, to play either online or in a league, you'll need to memorize or write down IP addresses. Remember having to know the IP address of who you're trying to play against? Well, that's back. Online play has also seen a jump backward to a much more complicated time. Playing with a 360 controller still works well and you'll be able to use the right stick just as you remember. Oddly enough, the game still has some fun to it a testament the strength of the NHL engine. It takes the right analog stick controls first pioneered in last year’s game and. They're blocky, lacking in detail, and they move with an arcade-like quality. NHL 09 isn’t just a great hockey game, it’s one of the best sports games to be released in the last decade. The ice physics are off, the checking looks odd, and player models look like their resolution has been bumped up from the PlayStation days.
